THE IMPORTANT ONE - ORIS ANNUAL REPORT

The Important One - ORiS Annual Report

This blog is aptly named 'the important one'. Now if you haven't figured out why, it's because (from an OR in Schools perspective anyway) it's important!

We've collated the data from the last academic year and you'll find all the important nuggets of information relating to OR in Schools below.

Bit of background .... The annual report for ORiS is published each year and gives an overview of what the OR in Schools initiative has achieved, where its focus on strategic projects is and where the priorities are for next year.  It details how many schools or universities we've been to, the age and year of students, locations and all the rest. So, as you can imagine - it contains a lot of detail!

The Numbers

So the headline information is in and it shows the data from the last academic year (running from 1st August 2017 until the 31st July 2018). I must say, I think the results are AWESOME!!

  • 37 University Visits
  • 24 School Visits
  • 35 'Other' Visits (Big Bang Fairs, Outreach Fairs, UKMT Events etc)
  • Total of 96 Individual Visits

We went from a total of 44 visits a few years ago, to a high of 54 visits, to a massive jump this year of 96. There are many things we can attribute this to ... we've had new staff at the society, we've had a more cohesive communication plan, support from above and so on and so forth. The one big reason we've been able to do this many though..... is YOU! If you are reading this blog, chances are you have been involved in OR in Schools this year.

If you have helped at a careers fair talking to university students, at a school helping children with maths or at a big bang regional or national fair, a big big thank you! Regardless of the motivation behind it (the free lunch, a day out the office or for the more altruistic of you who want to inspire the next generation), we are truly grateful!

Volunteer Training

We provided volunteer training to 80 individuals. This combined OR and STEM volunteer training lasts 2 hours and covers a background of the OR in Schools initiative, along with practical exercises demonstrating the resources available to use with students of different ages. The feedback was great - just check out the comments below:

·         Excellent Intro and examples - well-presented and confidently communicated. Routinely use OR but hadn't connected it with STEM opportunities"

·         "Good comprehensive pack of info that makes it easier to approach a school and have confidence to present, keen to use the content."

·         "Enjoyed the presentation and the enthusiasm of the presenter about OR"

Now, as I'm sure you all know we're maths people! We like numbers and data and so whilst the comments sound good, they could only represent a very small sample that may be biased as we selected them.

Therefore, we've got a table that includes the two main questions we asked recipients at the end of the training - along with the answers they gave us.

Looking Forward

Looking forward to next year we've also got some great stuff planned! We have already accepted sponsorship to attend the National Big Bang Fair at the NEC again next year; we  were delighted to be invited back with support from Engineering UK!

We have partnered with Pro Bono OR to advertise a project, undertaking a review on the OR in Schools volunteer data we have and how best to match up volunteers to events.

Also, we have started filming for promotional videos – similar to those Pro Bono OR have on the website. It’s hoped these short clips will provide another way of engaging with volunteers and promote the OR in Schools programme.

Finally, If you are interested to know more - stay tuned! Once the report has been produced and signed off, the full report will be published on the website. It needs formal approval before the full version can be shared and is filed, but I hope the highlights will interest you in reading it!

As always, any questions or comments please get in touch - we're on Twitter (@ORinSchools) and of course email (schools@theorsociety.com)
