Back in #London for the Big Bang Near Me Fairs

This week (Wednesday, Thursday and today), we have been involved with the regional Big Bang Fairs in London.

This is a local event held in three different locations (Central, East and West) aimed at engaging future students in STEM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. We've been talking to students and showing them that OR is useful, relevant and really important for the future! We've brought along leaflets, puzzles, games and stickers.

We had two wonderful volunteers helping on Wednesday in Central - one worked for the Home Office and one was retired. Both shared their personal views and thoughts on what OR is, where it can lead to and why it's awesome. It was great to hear such different perspectives - one was female and had a PhD in physics and was relatively new to OR whereas the other was male, had been in OR a long time and was well known in the OR world!

We got the chance to talk to students about what we did, teachers promoting the free workshops we offer and other organisations to find out how they do outreach work. It's also a very busy few days - but great fun.

This year we exhibited; previously we've ran more structured workshops but we were keen to try the more informal style this time round - handing out freebies and chatting to students as they passed! It was a different take on the event and next year we might try and do both (depending on the number of volunteers available)!!

We've got the final Big Bang London event next week - it's happening in South London (Sutton Grammar School) over Friday and Saturday and will be a similar event - albeit with families on the Saturday. If you're attending, come along and say hi (and grab some freebies whilst you're at it)!
